Become a Fleet Body Technician with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and play a key role in maintaining our acclaimed fleet, including cars, heavy machinery, trailers, and bodywork.

In this position, you’ll tackle collision repairs, conduct preventive maintenance, execute equipment customizations, and ensure the longevity of vehicles and equipment supporting over 26,000 acres of forest preserves.

What You’ll Do

  • Conduct maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment, including cars, trucks, trailers, boats, and off-road units.
  • Execute body and frame repairs, apply paint, decals, and protective coatings.
  • Customize vehicles and equipment to align with operational requirements and specifications.
  • Perform MIG, TIG, and Stick welding, as well as fabrication, on steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
  • Assess damage and generate repair estimates for insurance claims and cost planning.
  • Restore trailers, install aftermarket components, and service alternative fuel tanks.
  • Safely and efficiently operate CNC units, plasma cutters, and grinders.
  • Support vendor selection and oversee coordination of external services.

What You’ll Need

  • Must be at least 18 years old at the time of hire.
  • Requires 4–6 years of skilled trades or technical training, or an equivalent blend of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record required.
  • Must pass an OSHA-required medical evaluation and fit test to safely use a respirator when needed.
  • Welding certification required or obtainable within one year of hire.
  • Certification in body shop estimation and damage analysis required or obtainable within one year of hire.
  • National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (6H) certification required or obtainable within one year of hire.
  • Ability to earn ASE certifications relevant to the role within one year of employment.
  • Proficient in safely operating a CNC unit.
  • In-depth knowledge of body repair and painting techniques, materials, tools, and methods.
  • Comprehensive understanding of workplace safety hazards and necessary precautions.
  • Skilled in MIG, TIG, and Stick welding techniques for steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
  • Proficient in operating plasma cutters and grinders.
  • Capable of diagnosing and repairing body and frame damage on automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Experienced in using and maintaining tools and equipment for vehicle and equipment servicing.
  • Skilled in welding and fabricating components made of steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
  • Able to comprehend and follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook Email, and fleet maintenance or body shop software.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities to keep accurate records and manage data effectively.

Schedule, Pay & Benefits

  • Full-time position | Monday–Friday, 6:45 AM–2:45 PM
  • Hourly starting wage: $29.70–$33.44

  • Stationed at the Fleet Services facility in West Chicago, IL.
  • Primarily works in-shop, with occasional fieldwork as required.
