The general sales manager is responsible for leading by example, encouraging, and assisting team members to provide outstanding customer service to increase sales.

Required Education, Knowledge, and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 5 years of experience working at a car dealership with one or more years as a sales department manager or other management position is preferred.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in Finance & Insurance (F&I) preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license is needed.
  • Have a strong working knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations affecting vehicle sales and the automotive industry, as a whole.
  • Exemplary leadership, organizational, financial, computer proficiency, sales process and management, and interpersonal communications skills are necessary.

Qualifications

Summary/Objective

The general sales manager is responsible for leading by example, encouraging, and assisting team members to provide outstanding customer service to increase sales.

Essential Functions

  • Actively participate in automotive group recruiting to hire sales talent for all positions.
  • Coach sales staff on best practices for improving performance, conducting effective follow-up, closing deals, and meeting and exceeding sales goals.
  • Forecast and track annual, quarterly, and monthly car sales to maximize gross profits
  • Maintain a high level of customer satisfaction in all auto sales to increase retention and referrals to drive repeat car sales and service.
  • Oversee all day-to-day activities within the automotive dealership with a focus on high employee and customer morale.
  • Keep an accurate record of existing and prospective customers within the CRM platform to effectively guide the sales process.
  • Makes sure the dealership has an appealing showroom, set up with vehicles and accessories to draw the interest of customers.
  • Ensures all assistant sales managers and product specialists are effectively utilizing VinSolutions, our chosen Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solution.
  • Supervises employees to ensure that facilities are clean, organized, and efficient.
  • Attends pertinent training as available to keep current with sales dealership concerns and new techniques.
  • Proactively works to create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment for all team members.
  • Performs all duties in a safe manner, immediately reporting any accidents, injuries or unsafe conditions to management and/or the human resources department.
  • Shows up for work, ready and able to perform essential job functions. 
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Perform other tasks as required.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position manages all employees of the department and is responsible for the performance management, safety, training, hiring and termination of the employees within that department.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours will vary to accommodate sales department working hours. This position regularly requires working evenings, weekends.

Travel

Travel may be required to attend meetings or presentations, expected to be less than 25% of the time.
