The Chicago Transit Authority is seeking skilled Bus Mechanics to perform comprehensive maintenance and repair work on Authority buses for bus mechanic jobs Chicago IL and Chicago Transit Authority bus mechanic positions.

This is a union position with a clear pay progression based on experience. As a transit bus maintenance technician Illinois, CTA fleet mechanic openings candidate, or experienced transit bus mechanic Illinois, you’ll handle heavy-duty repairs, diesel systems, preventive maintenance, and diagnostics on the CTA’s large bus fleet while utilizing the MMIS system for accurate work documentation.

Pay Progression (per current CBA):

• 1-12 Months: $37.64 per hour
• 12-24 Months: $42.35 per hour
• 25+ Months: $47.05 per hour
  $78,000 to $97,800 annual

Key Responsibilities:

• Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and maintain various bus systems and components
• Inspect, align, replace, adjust, and repair bus components and systems
• Use instruments, gauges, and computers to identify causes of malfunctions or failures
• Perform preventive maintenance on transit buses, systems, and components
• Record and verify repair data in the MMIS system
• Prepare written reports and complete vehicle repair documentation
• Perform vehicle servicing and cleanliness functions as needed
• Operate buses and Authority vehicles in shop/garage areas and on public right-of-way
• Perform related duties as assigned

What We’re Looking For:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Minimum of two (2) years of verifiable experience in automotive, truck, or bus repair and maintenance (or applicable military experience, or a combination of education and experience). A certificate/diploma in medium/heavy-duty or diesel engine vehicle repair from an accredited trade/vocational school or college counts as verifiable experience
• Must pass FTA-mandated drug and alcohol testing
• Acceptable driving record and valid State of Illinois Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or valid CDL permit with Knowledge and Air Brakes endorsements
• Must pass a mechanics practical test (physical and written) prior to hire
• Must obtain forklift certification through CTA Bus Maintenance Training Department (OSHA requirement)
• EPA 608 Certification in refrigerant handling is a plus
• ASE Transit Bus or Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications are a plus
• Willingness to accept job-related responsibility and accountability

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand for extended periods, walk, lift and carry up to 100 pounds, climb ladders/scaffolds, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach
• Manual dexterity, visual acuity (including color distinction), and ability to hear verbal instructions, alarms, and horns
• Must meet and maintain physical requirements to safely perform all job duties

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Working knowledge of truck and bus automatic transmissions, rear axle configurations, diesel/gasoline/alternative fuel engines, propulsion, steering, and “S” cam air brake systems
• Working knowledge of shop theory, hand and power tools, and repair procedures for engines, transmissions, A/C, steering, and air brakes
• Basic knowledge of electrical/electronic, mechanical, and air conditioning vehicle systems
• Good oral and written communication skills, basic math and computer skills
• Ability to read and interpret diagrams, schematics, blueprints, and procedures
• Ability to use test equipment including computers, gauges, and diagnostic tools
• Ability to operate Authority vehicles in shop areas and on public roadways

• Subject to Bus Maintenance Garage and System Picks
• Exposure to outdoor weather (heat, cold, humidity, noise, vibration)
• Exposure to mechanical, atmospheric, and chemical hazards
