Under the direction of the Supervisor-Transportation, this Journeyman Auto Mechanic oversees evening shift operations, performs journey-level repair and overhaul of District vehicles including school buses and trucks, and plans, assigns, and reviews the work of others during the assigned shift for lead automotive mechanic jobs Torrance CA and Torrance Unified School District mechanic roles.

Key Responsibilities:

• Diagnose, repair, maintain, and overhaul gasoline, diesel, high-tech diesel, and CNG engines
• Assist the Supervisor-Transportation with shop operations and repair fuel systems on gasoline, diesel, propane, and natural gas vehicles
• Prioritize, organize, assign, and review work during the assigned shift
• Train staff as needed and inspect completed work
• Communicate with vendors; order and pick up parts; keep the garage clean, orderly, and safe
• Coordinate service and repair of District maintenance vehicles
• Inspect buses and vehicles for health and safety compliance; use diagnostic equipment on engines and electrical/automotive systems
• Balance and align wheels; change oil and rotate tires; fit pistons and rings; calibrate engine parts; replace clutches; repair or rebuild transmissions and rear differentials
• Inspect, adjust, and repair ABS braking, electrical, air, and ABS hydraulic systems
• Tune up diesel and CNG engines; perform monthly school bus inspections and meet California Highway Patrol requirements
• Road-test vehicles using a laptop or other diagnostic aides; determine out-of-service criteria
• Steam-clean engines and chassis; prepare school buses for annual CHP inspections
• Weld and fabricate metal parts; operate a brake lathe; use a micrometer to measure drums and rotors
• Estimate time and material costs
• Operate diagnostic equipment, power and hand tools, and a computer/laptop for electronically controlled engines
• Maintain records of work performed, hours, and materials used
• Replace and rebuild front suspension components, including independent front suspension, straight axle, kingpin bushings, leaf springs, and shackles
• Repair air-ride suspensions, axles, valves, and air bags; adjust ride height
• Repair and inspect school bus wheelchair lifts, electrical and hydraulic systems, and related parts
• Repair or replace glass, floors, and seat cushions
• Perform minor to major school bus body repairs, including metal shaping and welding
• Respond to emergency road calls; repair on site or determine if towing is required
• Assist other maintenance personnel and perform related duties as assigned

Education & Experience:

• Any combination equivalent to three years of journey-level mechanical maintenance experience

Licenses:

• Valid California Class B driver’s license
• Must maintain insurability at the District’s standard rate

Salary (Pay Range)Step 1: $34.74 – Step 5: $42.24 Per HourStep 1: $6,022 – Step 5: $7,322 (Monthly, Full-Time)
